It is estimated that 90% of people who embark on a fat-loss attempt will fail.
Many will fail multiple times before finally making a "break-through" and losing the extra fat. And even among those who succeed, most end up struggling endlessly to keep the extra fat off. Very few succeed the FIRST time, and then KEEP the fat away for a life-time.
So what separates those who struggle eternally, and those who succeed and stay successful?

Let me give you a hint...
It has NOTHING to do with what diet they chose, or what workout program they follow, or what supplements they are taking!!!
So what is the secret???
The "secret" is the SOURCE of their motivation... What drives their desire/need to lose the fat? What purpose, what priority, and what impetus is the fuel that feeds their fat-loss journey? The answer to that question... is the determining factor between success and failure, between a lifetime of fitness, and a lifetime of struggle.
UNFORTUNATELY... Our business is FULL of quick weight-loss programs. All of them work in the VERY short term... and then fail. None of them address the REAL source of success.
We're also inundated with unlimited numbers of complex diets. With everything from macronutrient restrictions, carb-cycling, medium chain fat fueled ketogenic programs, anti-inflammation diets, raw food diets, Paleolithic diets , Mediterranean diets, etc, etc... They all work! Until they fail.
Then there are the training programs! Every one of them "scientifically backed" program designs balancing percentages of one-rep-max, progression schemes, de-load weeks, color-schemed heart-rate ranges, swinging on pull-up bars like a chimpanzee, or swinging giant hammers into truck tires until you puke... They all work too! Until they fail.
Then, there's the miracle supplements! And the shakes! And the detoxes! And the body-wraps! And the hypnosis! Okay, so most of them are absolute bullshit and don't work at all... BUT THEY ALL EVENTUALLY FAIL!

So everything fails... except "motivation". So how the hell do I get this motivation! Where can I buy it? Do you guys sell it at BURN Fitness? MOTIVATE ME!!!!
We can't... We can loan you some of ours for a little while. Much of what we do is EXTRINSIC motivation. Extrinsic motivation is external. It is something outside of you, that pushes you to succeed. Trainers do this. We PUSH, we motivate, we teach, we provide accountability. This is why working with a Trainer is usually MUCH more successful than going it on your own. Unfortunately, there are just as many distractions and DE-MOTIVATORS working against you as there are motivators... sometimes more. So lacking extrinsic motivators, and in the face of a dozen obstacles... where do you find long-term success?
Intrinsic Motivation...
Intrinsic motivation is a motivation from within. It's a deep seated drive to succeed. It's a drive inside of you that just keeps pushing you forward no matter what. Some people are born with it, but anyone can create it, cultivate it, and build it up. Usually it takes one of two things to build intrinsic motivation, either a driving single passion (extrinsic) that eventually becomes a lifestyle (intrinsic), or a driving single FEAR (extrinsic) that becomes a lifestyle (intrinsic).
The "fear" motivator unfortunately for many people comes from a health scare, like a mild heart attack, or another medical incident that CANNOT BE IGNORED! That medical incident drives a person to make up for lost time to literally save their life, and then that constant fear of what COULD HAPPEN if they quit, keeps them going. Something bad creates something good. A diagnosis of pre-diabetes, dangerously high lipids, blood pressure, or other issues is often enough. The key is maintaining that passion to train, even after the threat is removed.
The "passion" motivator is obviously a better option! Finding a passion for fitness is the best route to building intrinsic motivation. For some people, it's deciding to do a physique contest. For others, it's getting in shape for a reunion, or wedding, or tropical vacation. The motivation and pressure of the timeline of the event is their extrinsic motivation... but once they reach the goal they set out to hit, they pleasure of being in amazing shape takes over, and the motivation remains well beyond the initial target. Simply having that target date out there, a reasonable time away, like 3-6 months, and working toward that target, focusing NOT on the outcome, but the process, is a wonderful way to build intrinsic motivation. The key, is having that goal... but working every day in the process to make it a lifestyle... not just a single "end-point"
Long-term success in fitness can never have a "finish line".
If you're looking for motivation, and want to make fitness and health a lifestyle... come see us at BURN Fitness. It's what we do. We NEVER sell short-term quick-fix solutions to our clients.
