
There are a "spectrum" of body types, called somatotypes. These somatotypes range from the tall, thin, and light-skeleton ectomorph, to the shorter, thicker, heavy-boned endomorph. In between the ectomorph type and the endomorph type is the mesomorph.
The majority of successful physique athletes were BORN mesomorphs. Your body type (somatotype) cannot be changed. It's yours for life. Most people are not EXACTLY one body type, but more correctly, they are somewhere on a spectrum between ecto and meso, or between meso and endo.
The basis of this blog post is not to dicuss somatotype. You can take a somatotype "quiz" online and get a good idea of where you lie on the spectrum. What I want to talk about is how different somatotypes have different nutritional patterns and needs, based off of a complex balance of insulin production, muscle mass, and fat mass. These physilogical differences effect how your body utilizes different macronutritents, specifically carbohydrates.
If you're following a meal plan, or macro guidelines designed for a mesomorph, or endomorph, and you're an ectomorph... you won't get optimal results! If you're a typical endomorph, and you eat like an ectomorph... you'll never achieve optimal body fat levels, or performance!
The VAST majority of nutrition "gurus", coaches, and writers ignore this element of nutrition. The VAST majority of successful bodybuilders-turned coaches are mesomorphs, or even endo/meso mixes. If you're an endo/meso also, their nutrition advice might work PERFECTLY for YOU... but if you're an ectomorph, you're screwed.
Take a close look at the coach's body type who's providing YOUR nutrition. ASK questions! Never ASSUME that your macros match your somatotype!
I'm a classic ectomorph, with a hint of mesomorph. My initial nutritional instruction as a bodybuilder was typical endo/meso eating (90% of the diets out there). My results sucked! A soon as I switched to eating for my somatotype... BOOM! Results!
The classical endo/meso diet coaches consider me a "freak", a genetic "phenom". I'm NOT... I'm an ectomorph! My carb intake and even optimal carb TYPE is the polar opposite of most "bodybuilding" diets. My body SCREAMS on sugar, builds muscle on sugar, and stays lean on sugar. As soon as I cut sugar (lower my insulin response), I lose muscle FAST. 90+% of bodybuilding diets basically FORBID sugar! For me... all wrong...
