Jeff started BURN Fitness Training, LLC in March of 2012. Prior to opening BURN, Jeff was the Director of the National Personal Training Institute (NPTI) of Tampa. NPTI is a trade school for the personal training profession, teaching anatomy, human physiology, bio-mechanics, training program design, nutrition, and the business of personal training. He started with NPTI in 2008 at the Orlando school teaching part time while training competitive teen athletes, and pro and semi-pro golfers in the Orlando area. As Director/Instructor at NPTI, Jeff has taught almost 100 new Personal Trainers the ins and outs of producing results in a gym! Jeff's formal education is a degree in Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering, and he served as a USAF Officer managing USAF Space Systems contracts out of Los Angeles before starting his career in fitness. As a Fitness Pro, he holds multiple certifications for strength and conditioning, personal training, sport-specific training, and nutrition. After 3.5 years at NPTI, he decided it was time to open his own studio and get back to training again full time.
In addition to working with high school and college level athletes as a private strength and conditioning coach for multiple sports, Jeff is also an expert at producing serious fat loss for “hard-case” clients. The majority of his business today is in this area. He understands that losing body fat and replacing lost muscle requires not only clean eating and hard work, but intelligent manipulation of the body’s natural hormone production. This scientific approach to fat loss and muscle gain eliminates the trial and error programs of the past, and crushes myths about fad training programs and techniques. Many of his clients have serious joint issues, and medical "challenges" that require specific program changes, but rarely stop the RESULTS his clients seek. Jeff regularly works with “seasoned athletes”, as experienced as 92 years old! He has shown significant increases in strength, stability, and durability along with balance, stamina, flexibility, and huge increases in energy with older clients. Strength, balance and durability mean FREEDOM and independence, which his older clients require. After all, it’s not the years in your life, but the life in your years!
"Age-defiance” is not just a catch phrase for Jeff, it’s a lifestyle. He continues to assert that he will never ask a client to do something he can’t do himself! Practicing what he preaches also entails heavy, consistent training, and clean eating, but with a balance!

I guess you can say I've been around physical activity my whole life...
I remember my father lifting weights and punching a heavy bag in the basement when I was a kid, my mom has played tennis for as long as I can remember and my step-dad plays 100 senior softball games a year. I started in the gym myself sometime around my junior year in high school, embarking on my first serious weight training program in 1994 while attending college.
Having never been an athlete I found I enjoyed the discipline of my new routine. Setting and achieving fitness goals brought me a profound sense of personal accomplishment and control.
In 1996, while preparing for my first bodybuilding competition, I began a high-protein diet and aerobic training. The intensity of the cardio training prompted me to quit smoking, ending an 12 year habit. Furthermore, the process of getting into competition shape taught me how to manipulate the various components of fitness and diet to create synergistic effects.
I obtained an undergraduate degree in Sports Managment from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst with a minor in Exercise Science in 1997. It was during this time that I met my ex-husband, Jason Brightman, at the gym where I worked out of course.
From 1998 to 2010 I moved all over the world as a US Air Force pilot's wife. We lived in Amherst MA, Pensacola FL, Corpus Christi TX, Little Rock AK, Tucson AZ, overseas in India, Altus OK, Charleston SC, Monterey CA and Tampa FL. Through all the moves I found unique ways to ply my trade, mastering yoga and meditation in India and running a hardcore boot camp for military members on the beaches of Monterey.
In October of 2013 I completed my Associate's degree in nutrition which qualified me to become a Dietetic Technician, Registered. I passed the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND) exam in the summer of 2014 officially becoming a DTR. I'm certified in not only Personal Training, but a host of other certifications including Group Exercise Instructor (BURN BootCamp) and Sports and Performance Nutrition.
Meanwhile in May 2013, I met Jeff Ward, owner of Burn Fitness Training in St. Pete FL. After I saw what he had started, and falling in love with it, he graciously asked me to become a 50% partner. I said yes and this gave me the opportunity to work with someone like-minded and grow a business about which I'm truly passionate. I also started training clients again after a three year hiatus getting back to what I love: helping people achieve their goals of health and wellness through exercise, fitness and proper nutrition.
Competitively, I earned my bodybuilding pro card in the International Fitness and Physique Association (IFPA) all-natural bodybuilding organization with a win at an amateur competition in Arizona in 2009. A few months later I completed a grueling 10 mile road race (I am not a runner, so this was a major triumph for me).
In June 2012 I finally competed in my first professional bodybuilding competition and placed fourth. This was a huge feat since it was my first pro show and it had been almost three years since my last competition. My placement qualified me for the World Championships, the Yorton Cup, which were held in Phoenix AZ in October 2012. There I placed 8th in an unbelievably competitive field of beautiful, amazing, fit women and it was an honor just to be on stage with them.
In 2014 I changed tracks just a little and tried my hand at a figure competition. Figure is very similar to bodybuilding but there is less emphasis on the level of muscularity and more focus on a fit, feminine aesthetic. At that time my physique was more appropriate to this type of competition and I was very successful, competing and winning multiple shows, qualifying for the National level.
In 2015 I changed courses again! This time competing in the NPC Bikini Division. Bikini lacks the muscular size of bodybuilding and physique, but seems more conducive to my body and posing for the pro level. Again I was very successful in bikini in 2015, with multiple wins, and another National level qualification.
Now, in 2016... I'm continuing on in NPC Bikini. In my first competition in February, I again came away with another class win (in Masters) and very strong finishes in the Open Class. I'm looking forward to taking a crack at an IFBB Master's Pro card in the IFBB in July! At 47 years young!
The essence of what I've learned about fitness rests on balance and synergy. A detailed focus on diet, cardio and resistance training yields amazing results that go far beyond the sum of their individual parts. Interestingly, this type of diet and training need not be especially restrictive, intense, nor time consuming. Instead, a simple balance of these three components combined with consistency can form a strong foundation for a lifetime of fitness.
Let me help you dial in your diet and workouts and strike your own personal balance! I look forward to sharing what I've learned with you.
Yours in sweat,
