Finding Your Fitness Motivation… And Keeping It!
Motivation is a critical element to fitness success. Without motivation, you’ll never get started on a fitness journey, and without sustained motivation… you’ll never stay on track long enough to see success. Motivation is the critical piece of the fitness puzzle… and motivation is what we do!
“I can’t get motivated enough to get started!”
“How do you stay so motivated?”
“I need some lasting motivation.”
“If I only had YOUR level of motivation!”
YOU CAN HAVE IT…
To understand motivation, we need to first define it. In the world of psychology, there are two major types of motivation… Intrinsic, and Extrinsic Motivation. To get motivated, and STAY motivated, you need to understand both forms, and figure out where you may need help.
Intrinsic Motivation comes from within. It is an internal, innate drive. People who possess intrinsic motivation simply “just do it”, when it comes to fitness. They have no problem getting up an hour earlier, hitting the gym every day, eating cleanly most of the time, prepping their meals, getting to bed on time… Their intrinsic motivation drives them forward, like a little positivity engine inside them that drives them toward success. Unfortunately… not all of us possess a fully developed sense of intrinsic motivation! In fact, I would guess that intrinsic motivation toward fitness is “naturally occurring” in only a small percentage of the population.
So if you were seemingly born without the intrinsic motivation “gene”, are you doomed to forever fail in fitness??? NO! Intrinsic motivation is possible to “develop” or “learn”, but for many who simply lack it… they must initially get their motivation from an external source. For many… intrinsic motivation needs an external spark to get it fired up. For others… it needs a blow-torch… but it CAN be ignited! This external motivation is called Extrinsic Motivation.
For many people, a steady supply of extrinsic motivation is needed to eventually find their own intrinsic motivation. Call it a little “guidance” from a role model, parent, coach, or trainer… that eventually wears off a bit on the subject, then their own intrinsic motivation comes out. Intrinsic motivation requires confidence in your ability. If you’re not confident that you have sufficient ability, or possess the right tool-set, intrinsic motivation is suppressed by a fear of failure. Once that tool-set is established, once a few small obstacles to success are cleared away, and once self-confidence roots itself in your subconscious… then the intrinsic motivation can blossom. But for MANY… that intrinsic motivation just will NOT come out and take hold, until it’s nurtured. Intrinsic motivation is also fueled by momentum and motivation “inertia”. Once you feel a little success, and that success is consistently experienced, that momentum builds… Kind of like roll starting your car if your battery is dead, and similarly... if you turn that car off… you’ll need another roll-start! If you never shut the motor off, you can go and go!
In the world of fitness, we consistently see failure after failure of good-intentioned people who simply lack enough intrinsic motivation to succeed. People who NEED to get healthier, who have major motivation to get in better shape, and people with all the means available for success… time, money, a gym membership, a basic understanding of healthy nutrition, etc, etc… repeatedly fail. It’s unfortunate, but it’s MUCH more common than instant fitness success. ALL of the new clients I speak to have tried time and again to get in shape on their own. I don’t think I’ve EVER spoken to a potential client whose first attempt at fitness success was with a Trainer! Quite often, seeing a trainer is a “ditch effort”, or a “last resort” after they have attempted time and time again… and failed… to fire up their intrinsic fitness motivation alone. Eventually after years of repeated minimal success followed by maximal failure… they get so far out of shape that they are simply trying to get into “decent” shape. Simply trying to lose the LAST ten pounds they gained… forget about the 40 they gained before that!
I wish that they had come to me YEARS before… I wish they had reached out early on in their journey, instead of years later. By now, the majority of them would have all the intrinsic motivation they need to succeed, and to stay successful in fitness.
The best source of extrinsic motivation for fitness is, hands down, working directly with a qualified, MOTIVATIONAL, Personal Trainer with a seemingly boundless source of intrinsic motivation to share!
Okay… so I guess I’m not an overflowing fountain of motivation 24/7… Lisa is better than I am, but both of us possess more than enough to share… We also possess the ability to TEACH the skill-set our clients need to break through their own fears of failure. Many trainers don’t… Many of our former clients now have the right tool-set, and the confidence, and the momentum to drive their own fitness journey. I’m happy to say I have MANY more FORMER clients than current clients. Both of us have HUNDREDS of former client, many we are still in touch with, who got their start in fitness with us… and have carried on for a lifetime on their own.
It’s ALWAYS hard to lose a client as a Trainer! I hate to see ANYONE go. But like a proud parent pushing their college-age kid out of the comfort of the “nest”, nothing is more satisfying than seeing them succeed on their own after building their skill-set with us at BURN! Lisa and I both have client who have gone on to compete, clients who have gone on to run marathons (craziness aside, not my fault!), clients who have eliminated ALL prescription meds, clients who have lost and kept off 100 pounds… Those clients all found their OWN intrinsic motivation after starting with NONE!
Other clients… I’ve had for 2, 3, even 4 years! They’ve decided that the motivation they get from me, or from Lisa, is all they need! Let’s just call it “renting” our motivation! It works for them! The KNOW they will get in 2-4 great workouts per week. They know that even if they are dragging… they’re STILL going to do something! Renting our motivation is fine with us too! It’s a great investment for them, and it’s stability of income for us!!!
Either way… If you come to get started with us, be it a few weeks of push, a few years of consistency, or a lifetime of “rental motivation”… our Extrinsic Motivation is here for you to sample! Come and get it!
