BURN Fitness 101: Fitness After 50, 60, 70… Training SMARTER as we Finally Grow Up!
The majority of my client base is north of 50! My most “experienced” client just turned 83… and she’s been doing 2 hours per week with me for 4 years! Lisa’s client base runs a bit younger, but she also has plenty in their 50s, 60, and 70s!
It’s ironic, that even though most of our aesthetic goals in fitness diminish as we age (except for a few of our 70+ “hard-bodies”…) our needs for the functional portion of fitness grows more and more each year. The clock keeps ticking, and we keep getting older. “Milage” on the skeleton accumulates, and tendons and ligaments get harder, and less elastic. Muscles atrophy, making us weaker, “saggier”, less tone and strong. The bones lose bone density, and large pores open up inside the bone’s structure (osteoporosis). As the density drops, the bones become brittle, and easily fracture. Unfortunately, a simple fall in our 60s or older can do MUCH more damage than a similar fall in our 30s or even 40s. The loss of elasticity and decrease in bone density can result in fractures where before we would “bounce” and bruise. The lack of strength from lost muscle results in the inability to catch ourselves before we fall. Not only can a simple stumble in our 30s and 40s become a fall later on, but AFTER a fall… the older, weaker body heals much more slowly… if at all.
Much of this is simply “accepted” by our society, and even by our medical community. “You’re just getting older! You NEED to slow down!” “I just can’t do what I use to do… I’m too old.”
I’m writing to tell you this… BULLSHIT!
You DON’T need to slow down. You need to pick up the pace!
Does that mean go out and join a Crossfit Box at 60? NOOOOO! Should you take up Orange Theory at 55 after not exercising for 30 years? Hell NO. But what you CAN do is start safely and intelligently with a BASE of conditioning, strength training, cardiorespiratory reconditioning, metabolic “reset”, and smart flexibility work to TURN BACK the clock.
