BURN Fitness 101: America’s Obsession with Quick-Fix Fitness… And Why It’s Making You Fatter
- Jeff Ward, CSCS (with Lisa Brightman, DTR)
All of the quick-fix “solutions” are soooo tempting!
7-Day Detox plans, 21-Day Fixes, 30-Day Challenges, even 90-Day Fitness and Nutrition DVD Programs. I mean… who DOESN’T want to drop 30 pounds of unsightly body-fat in 30 days??? Who doesn’t want to drink 2 miracle-super-nutrition-super-protein-magic-formula-shakes a day, and drop body-fat without breaking a sweat? Who doesn’t want to do nothing but body-weight squats for a month and end up with a perfect back-side? Who doesn’t want to simply follow along to a DVD for a few months, and miraculously turn into a Men’s Health cover model?
“Some big-name celebrity did it, took it, used it, and got in AMAZING shape in 2 short moths for a movie roll! It’s gonna work for you too…” right?
No doubt, one of your Facebook friends tried this great program themselves… they were skeptical at first like you… but they did it and got AMAZING results! And now for only $300-400 you can try it too! And then you can get other people to try it… and then you can quit your full-time job and actually make money selling these magic products to friends, and get them to sell it to their friends.
The problem with 100% of the quick-fix fitness “solutions” is that 100% of them are 100% bull-sh__... because 100% of them fail to address the long-term consequences of short-term “success”.
Sure, if your ONLY concern in life is looking a bit better in a swimsuit in 30-60 days, regardless of what long-term damage you do to your body/metabolism/psychology… then these quick-fixes actually work pretty well. But… if you’d like to look better, and better, in that swimsuit for the rest of your life… EVERY single quick-fix fitness (and nutrition) program will fail. None address your fitness and nutrition BEYOND the scope of the program.
Scientifically… every time you either impose a massive calorie drop for a short time (detox plans, week-long diets, etc), or a massive trauma to a single muscle group (like doing thousands of squats in 30 days), you’re accumulating metabolic or physical damage to your body. Even though it works ONCE, as soon as you go back to your “normal” routine, the results will fade as fast as they came, but the damage will stay. So since it worked pretty well the first time… but your lack of consistency resulted in regression… you do it again. You do it again because PSYCHOLOGICALLY you’re hooked on looking a certain way. Another “detox” (week of starvation), or another “Challenge” (month of abuse)! This time it doesn’t work quite as well… but it works a LITTLE, so it’s a partial success. Then you gain it all back. But it wasn’t the PROGRAM’S fault. You’re convinced that the program works, because it worked before! Psychologically, you BLAME the reduced success on yourself. Eventually the week of starvation, or the month of abuse, turns into an every-week/month obsession that you have to continue constantly to just keep a LITTLE of your effects. It’s the diet and exercise equivalent of cocaine! Your fist tiny dose works GREAT! But eventually, you’ll be snorting your mortgage payment in order to get just a little high… In the long-term, that 600kcal per day “detox”, eating bizarre and highly restrictive foods, will eventuallyt become your typical/normal daily diet… and you’ll STILL be over-fat.
So what’s the solution?
Quit trying for quick-fix results NOW! Drop the diets, drop the detox plan, drop the weight-loss shakes, shut off the DVD.
Quit going to an MLM “Expert” with ZERO background in fitness and nutrition, whose only evidence base is personal experience and fellow-salesperson testimonials!
Find a professional who can address WHY you’re still fat at 700kcal per day (and 2 hours of cardio)! Accept the FACT that reversing the damage of multiple diets and quick-fixes ABSOLUTELY will require you to gain a little weight, in order to lose more fat permanently. Accept the fact that there is NO quick-fix solution to a long-term issue… like years of sedentary behavior and food-abuse.
The solution to excess fat, and lack of tone/definition, does not lie in a bottle, an X-Day Program, or a DVD. The solution involves addressing the root of your problem… making permanent changes to your metabolism, and permanent changes to your physique.
If you’re in the St Petersburg area... PLEASE come see Lisa or myself for a consultation. If you’re not, contact us anyways, and we can point your head in the right direction on what you look for in your area for direction.
Please stop making yourself fatter and LESS healthy! Please… look into a long-term fix… quick-fixes just make things worse.
