The “Side-Effects” of Fitness
(Originally Published Aug 2013)
The drug commercials on the radio and on TV drive me CRAZY these days. They take the first 45 seconds to tell you of the purported benefits of taking their “wonder-drug”, and then take the last 15 seconds to reel off the litany of negative side effects. It’s SICKENING… The advertised drug is prescribed to treat an “illness”, but the cure seems worse than the disease. Typically, the prescribed drug doesn’t address the root illness at all, but simply suppresses a symptom. If you’ve got multiple symptoms… you get multiple drugs! While more often than not, the root cause of the body’s dysfunction is simply lifestyle… sedentary activity levels and miserably poor nutrition.
Science and practice has shown us that one of the most effective “treatments” for many of the illnesses and dysfunctions we are challenged with today is regular exercise. Included in this treatment, is a matching plan for healthy, substantive, and calorically balanced nutrition. Of course we don’t have many TV commercials for exercise and nutrition as a treatment for illness… but if we did, I wanted to highlight the basic benefits of the fitness and nutrition “miracle drug”… and then of course… list the horrible side-effects!
Benefits of Regular Exercise and Balanced Nutrition: Regular vigorous exercise and clean calorie-correct eating is designed to produce decreases in body-fat, with increases in lean muscle, and strength. These are not just “typical” results… these are guaranteed results! It works 100% of the time.
WARNING!!! The side-effects typically include the following: Increased self-esteem and self-worth; greater energy levels for longer periods of time without crashes; reduced blood pressure; improved glucose tolerance; improved mood and disposition; better, deeper restful sleep; improved appearance; reduced signs of aging; longer active/productive life-span if not increased total life-span; increased sex drive and improved sexual performance; reduction in stress hormones; increases in natural anabolic (muscle building) and lipolytic (fat burning) hormones; improved immune function; increases in flexibility; improved durability, endurance, stamina and drive; reduced incidence and duration of illness; improved recovery time from minor injury; improved digestion nutrient absorption and utilization; decreased caffeine dependence; improved flexibility range of motion and joint stability; decreased dependence on blood pressure medication; decreased anxiety and need for mood altering medications; improved insulin sensitivity, stabilization of blood sugars and decreased dependence on sugar control medications; reduction in LDL (bad) cholesterol with increases in HDL (good) cholesterol without medications… etc., etc., etc.
The list of side-effects goes on and on… What a “horrible” list of potential side-effects!
Our society is so dependent on drugs and pharmaceutical “Band-Aids”. These treatments simply mask the symptoms of our base dysfunction… which more times than not is a crappy diet, and sedentary lifestyle!
Take a look at the side-effects listed above and see what reasons YOU may have to start a regular exercise program. Getting started is the hardest part… but once you experience all of these “nasty” side effects, you’ll be HOOKED!!
If you need a little guidance and motivation on where/how to start, just give us a call!
